Note from author: This was originally going to be a collective review, but it didn't work out that way. The failed attempt at collective art criticism has given me greater respect for collective art making....Yerba Buena CenterSarah Lockhart2006-06-01T12:34:48-08:00The Lake Writing, Textual Works

Manuscript pages on the wall detail written observations of a natural site. The writing looks conventional; handwriting flows left to right, page by page in an elegant but un-theatrical cursive. The handwriting is black and appears more rushed at times, but not by much. 24 manuscript pages in 4 groups...New Langton ArtsMarcus Civin2006-06-01T10:48:17-08:00International Arts and Crafts

A small, self-standing clock that sits atop a pedestal is among the first objects one encounters in the International Arts and Crafts exhibition at the de Young Museum. The clock is modest compared to many of the objects that surround it. It’s scale and hand-painted wooden surfaces seem quaint next...DeYoung MuseumScott Oliver2006-05-27T16:15:46-08:00The Art of Tea

I attended the opening of “The Art of Tea” (or Why is Soda Pop More Popular than Tea?) show at the Cricket Engine Gallery last Friday and I did not see a single Mr.T related work. What a gyp! Although artist Lexa Walsh did create a piece titled “Cozy” constructed from hair extensions that did very much resemble something that would be very much at home on the head of George Clinton or Cousin It.Cricket Engine GalleryAndy Phares2006-05-23T12:25:39-08:00Michelle Waters' "Animal Insurrection"

"Animal Insurrection," Michelle Waters’ series of paintings at the Presidio’s Thoreau Center reminds us that art can, even in the apres-moi-la-Deluge decadence of the late Bush Regime, aspire to arouse the social conscience and foster a sense of ecological urgency. The Thoreau Center GalleryDeWitt Cheng2006-05-22T18:37:48-08:00Felipe Dulzaides & Packard Jennings

The concurrent solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery presenting Packard Jennings and Felipe Dulzaides made use of the unexamined life under scrutiny tying in several cases of suspect: suggestive advertising, target marketing, rediscovered perspective of the everyday, and the challenge of office culture on the human instinct....Catharine Clark GalleryPetra Bibeau2006-05-18T17:09:34-08:00Moby/Monstro and me.

Chad Stayrooks show at Ping Pong gallery mixes fantasy with mild psychosis via the scientific method… I think the best part of the show was not the images on the wall, nor the giant whale – Chad’s impromptu performance WITH the whale on the other hand, and his documentation via...Ping Pong galleryCatherine Czacki2006-05-12T00:54:42-08:00Red76

Collectives are a new hot topic for museums across the country, institutions attempting to reaffirm their anti-establishment street-cred by showing work that challenges the organization’s own purpose as cultural mediator. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is hosting a year-long investigation into the phenomenon of artist collaboratives and the current...Yerba Buena CenterDina Pugh2006-05-08T21:43:59-08:00Tia Factor

I happened to be blabbing on my cell phone after leaving Mama Buzz in Oakland the other day and as I was jawing away aimlessly, my eye caught on something in the windows of the neighboring space called Keys That Fit. Snapshot Chronicles is a collection of album pages opened to a range of idiosyncratic moments, captured by accidental historians. In other words, while we can assume that these early point-and-shooters were aware of their role as agents of memory, some of them may have also been experimenting with a new...SF Public Library (Jewett Gallery)Joseph del Pesco2006-04-14T10:02:25-08:00Rapid Eye Movement

Varnish Fine Art is a classy little joint, with exposed brick walls, industrial steel walkways, and a wine bar, tucked away on Natoma Street behind the SFMOMA and the Academy of Art University. True to its environs, Varnish specializes in marketable, illustrative art. I personally do not take issue with...Varnish Fine ArtAnuradha Vikram2006-04-12T19:09:06-08:00Homegrown: Bay Area Media Art
